Fathima Paruk is Full Professor and the Clinical & Academic Head of the Department of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and the University of Pretoria. She is the Immediate Past President of the Critical Care Society of Southern Africa and serves as a council member of the World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine. Additionally, she holds various positions including Co-Chair of the Africa Telehealth Collaboration, Chair of the examining critical care college committee (CMSA) and membership of the University of Witwatersrand Human Research Ethics Committee. She has served on several Ministerial appointed committees including the National Health Research Committee and the Committee for the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths in SA and more recently serves on the Regulatory Council, the HPCSA. She has successfully trained several intensivists, supervised numerous postgraduate degrees including several PhDs across SA. She has authored several guidelines, book chapters, reviews and research publications and is regularly invited as a speaker at national and international platforms.
